Join artists Aymar Ccopacatty and Sarah Kavage as they float ARC, their reed boat, in the boat basin at the Independence Seaport Museum. The two have been working on the vessel in ISM’s maker space since September. The artists will host an informal conversation and Q&A about the boat's origins, inspiration, and construction.
ARC is a modern adaptation of a traditional Aymara reed boat, built with local materials including invasive Phragmites reed and scavenged plastic bottles. In doing so, it connects materials and methods across space and time — contemporary and traditional, near and far — to prompt discussion about the movement of plants and people across the globe, climate change, environmental degradation, climate migration, colonization, and solidarity between peoples across the Americas.
Access notes: The boat basin at the Seaport Museum is wheelchair accessible via a ramp from the sidewalk. For additional location, accessibility, and transportation information on ISM’s website, click here.
